“Let them eat cake” Marie Antoinette made the hair pouf famous when she wore it to the coronation of her husband Louis XVI. The towering style of the day was immensely popular but often difficult to maintain. Like the lady’s corsette, the pouf had it’s own metal base that would structure the shape of the hairstyle and a triangular pillow would be used for support. The frame was also intertwined with pomaded false hair as well as the owner’s locks. Who doesn’t love an almost papier-mâché Coiffure, right? Since the do was often coated with animal fat and a wheat flour powder, the hair would become rancid and attract, wait for it, rats! Gals, beauty is suffering. That couldn’t be more apparent than in the new episode of Beauty’s Always Been A Bitch. This time we find an 18th Century France beauty guru passing on her method for keeping that larger than life hairstyle “rat’s nest” FREE. Enjoy HOW TO MAINTAIN A COLOSSAL COIF (1770s France)! C’est la vie, Sean Bap-Squeak!
