On a previous program Last Week Tonight) brought attention to the corruption that runs rampant in the soccer’s international governing body, Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Well, since that program aired the U.S. Department of Justice indicted 9 high-ranking FIFA officials and 5 corporate executives with a slew of charges including racketeering, wire fraud, and money laundering. Also, this month several of the officials were taken into custody for questioning by Swiss authorities, launching a separate criminal investigation into how the organization awarded the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar. John Oliver addressed these investigations, but also took time to point out the fact that FIFA President Sepp Blatter still remains in power. In Oliver’s words “barring an indictment, the only people with the power to get rid of Sepp Blatter are FIFA’s sponsors.” So in true Last Week Tonight fashion Oliver made a plea to the sponsors of FIFA to pull their support by promising to promote their products on air, including drinking a Bud Light lime. You’ll have to see to believe it! Enjoy!
