Sometimes you have to pay it forward and the folks at the new comedy club at Bergamot Station Arts Center, THE CROW, in Santa Monica are doing just that. It all began when theater nerds, Nicole and Mickey Blaine, met back in 1992 at Santa Monica High. Ever since then, the’ve been producing and teaching theater, film, and comedy together. They executive produced and directed the stand-up special Burning the Light on HBO. Nicole has been producing The Showdown Comedy Fest annually at the Westside Comedy Theater since 2014, discovering the next generation of comedians, and bringing in top level execs to participate in free in-depth industry panels. Nicole’s passion is to create an opportunity for comics to get to the next level in their career by creating space and opportunity for them to be seen.
Rising out of this passion for creating understanding and growth through laughter, the mom-owned and run comedy space, The Crow, is taking flight. The club seeks to bring a fresh perspective to comedy, welcoming comics of all ages, gender and abilities. This summer ’22, through week-long programs, any kid between 7 and 12 will have the opportunity to learn joke structure while finding their perspective and voice through stand-up, improv, sketch, storytelling, writings, and stage confidence. Each day will be filled with play and activities, mixing in team building, performance art, arts and crafts, and community service. At the end of each session, campers will perform in a live performance for family and friends. Activity goers will be able to register between one and five sessions with the camp costing $450 a week, and sessions running from June 13 through July 15th. Thanks to Chris and Rachel Sullivan (This is Us), full scholarships are available, as well! Start summer off right through the power of laughter!
