Sunday night John Oliver launched his #GoGetThoseGeckos Twitter campaign via HBO’s Last Week Tonight. Russia had lost contact with a space satellite containing the randy lizards who are part of a biological experiment on the effect of microgravity on adult gecko sexual behavior and embryonic development. Oliver used celebrity pleas and a strong social media campaign to bring hope to humanity amid all the recent world chaos. Well, we are happy to relay the news that Russian officials reported that they’ve re-established connection with the now “internet-famous” gecko satellite. Those little buggers still have a long trip ahead of them, however. Their capsule has to withstand re-entry into the planet’s atmosphere and land in southern Russia in mid-September. We sure hope they make it! Thank you, John Oliver, for the gecko smiles.
