Long before Andrew Lloyd Webber introduced Christine and her Phantom stalker to Broadway, there was an ominously silent, black and white film bringing true terror to the masses. The 1925 horror flick is known as The Phantom of the Opera. Adapted from Gaston Leroux’s 1920 novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, the movie starred “The Man of a Thousand Face” Lon Chaney as the notorious inhabitant of the Paris Opera House causing murder and mayhem in his wake. The film is, in fact, one of Chaney’s most famous make-up transformations. (Chaney was lauded for his pantomime skills which can be credited to his upbringing being a child of deaf parents. Bet you didn’t know that!)
